🏅 PSA Grading: How to Get Your Pokémon Card Graded

What is PSA grading and why collectors care

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the best-known grading service in the world. Your card is examined by experts, receives a grade on a 1-10 scale and is sealed in a hard plastic holder (a slab) with a certification number. Grading covers three things at once: authenticity, condition and protection.

For an investor the key point is liquidity: a graded card sells faster and for more money. A PSA 10 typically fetches 2-4x the raw card price, and even more for chase cards. On the other hand grading costs money and time, so it does not pay off for every card.

The PSA 1-10 scale in short

• PSA 10 (Gem Mint) - a virtually perfect card. Sharp corners, clean surface, no print defects, well-centered.
• PSA 9 (Mint) - one minor flaw, usually slightly off-centering or a small white dot on an edge. The most common grade for modern cards.
• PSA 8 (NM-MT) - a visible but small flaw, still a great-looking card.
• PSA 7 and below - for modern cards usually worth less than a clean raw copy; for vintage cards still desirable.

The price gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is huge, often 2-3x. That is why you should only submit cards with a realistic shot at a 10.

Step 1: Pick the right card

Before shipping anything, inspect the card under a strong light, front and back. Focus on:

• Centering - the left/right and top/bottom border ratio. PSA allows roughly 55/45 front and 75/25 back for a 10.
• Corners - sharp, no whitening or dings.
• Edges - silver and holo edges reveal whitening instantly.
• Surface - scratches on holo foil, fingerprints, print lines and dents.

Rule of thumb: if you can see a flaw with the naked eye, a 10 is unlikely. For modern cards from Europe it only makes sense to submit pack-fresh near mint pulls; vintage cards have more tolerance because even a PSA 8 vintage holo keeps appreciating.

Step 2: Check that grading pays off

Grading is not free, and from Europe you add shipping to the USA, insurance and possibly customs and VAT on the return. A rough rule: grading pays off when the graded value comfortably exceeds the raw price plus all grading costs.

Typical grading candidates: chase cards from new sets (SAR, SIR, alt arts), vintage holos in top shape, promos, and cards you plan to hold long term.

Step 3: Prepare the card for the trip

1. Put the card into a penny sleeve, then into a semi-rigid holder (Card Saver I is the standard PSA requires). Never use a toploader - graders struggle to remove the card and damage happens.
2. Do not tape over the opening of the holder.
3. Create a PSA account, fill in the online submission (exact card name, set, number and declared value - the tier depends on it) and print the confirmation.
4. Pack the cards in the order shown on the confirmation, wrap in bubble wrap and ship as an insured parcel.

Step 4: Choose a tier and expect waiting time

PSA offers several tiers based on the declared card value and turnaround speed. Economy and Value tiers are cheapest but take months. Express tiers take weeks but cost significantly more. Current prices and estimated turnaround times are in our grading calculator.

From Europe it pays to submit a larger batch at once - shipping and customs handling split across more cards drops the per-card cost dramatically.

Step 5: Customs, VAT and the return

When the slab returns from the USA to the EU, customs and VAT apply based on the declared value. Expect a few extra days for customs clearance plus brokerage fees. These costs are included in the calculator budget so they will not surprise you.

Alternatives to PSA

PSA commands the highest resale prices and the strongest brand, but there are alternatives:

• CGC - cheaper, with an EU hub, so no customs and faster turnaround. Resale value sits below PSA though.
• Beckett (BGS) - premium holder and subgrades, popular for modern cards; the black label 10 is rarer than a PSA 10.
• European services - no customs and fast, but they carry less weight on resale value so far.

For pure investment purposes PSA leads. For a personal collection where protection and looks matter most, European alternatives make sense.

When NOT to grade

• The card has visible flaws - the grading spend will not come back.
• A common card worth a few euros - grading costs exceed any gain.
• You need to sell quickly - grading takes months.

Latest news: the Standard tier and PSA Europe (September 2026)

PSA has just reshuffled its service lineup, so here is what changes from September 2026:

• Standard (new) - from September 14, 2026 at $59.99 per card, estimated turnaround 90-100 business days, maximum insured value of $1,000 per card. PSA stresses that Standard is not a replacement for the paused Value tiers, but a new middle level.
• Priority (formerly Regular) - $79.99 per card, 70-80 business days, $1,500 insured ceiling.
• Express - raised from $149 to $199; the 20-30 business day estimate and $2,500 ceiling stay unchanged. PSA cites demand outrunning capacity as the reason.
• Premier (formerly Walk-Through) - $599 per card, 7-10 business days, $10,000 ceiling.
• Value tiers - Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus and Value Max remain paused since June due to a massive submission spike.

PSA finally in Europe

The biggest news for us: in mid-September 2026 PSA Europe opened submissions for European collectors. In practice that means a simpler submission process from Europe without going through middlemen.
